A short walk took us to City Hall. I followed Bobbie down a wide corridor to the mayor’s office, where we found Alice eating a sandwich at her desk.

Bobbie greeted her. “I hope we’re not interrupting your lunch.”

Alice wiped her mouth on a napkin and smiled, seemingly glad to have visitors. “Hello, Bobbie. How nice to see you.” She found a spiral bound book under some papers and flipped through the pages. “Do you have an appointment with the mayor?”

“We came to see you,” Bobbie said.

“Me?” Alice’s face lit up, and she looked at the two of us expectantly.

I felt bad that we only came to grill her about the competition rules, but I should have known that Bobbie would be able to finesse the situation.

“I hoped to get your opinion, since you have so much experience with music and the competition,” Bobbie said. “You know, the Ukulele Ladies are down to three members.”

Alice’s smile slipped away. “I never told you how sorry I was about Martha. You must be heartbroken. Such a nice lady.”

I thought about what people might say if I died suddenly, and I didn’t think “nice lady” would be in my eulogy.

“She was,” Bobbie agreed. “And with her gone, and Rosa’s wrist injured, Gypsy, Ralph, and I aren’t sure if we want to continue with the competition. I mean, we’d need to find another ukulele player, but that’s not really the issue. It’s just so sad, you know?”

“I understand exactly what you’re saying. But don’t you think Martha would want you to compete? She loved being a Ukulele Lady.”

Bobbie appeared to think this over. “I hadn’t thought of it that way.” She turned to me. “What do you think?”

I gave them what I hoped was a warm smile, using long dormant muscles. “I think Alice is right. Too bad about the rule change. It’s short notice to break in a new member.”

Alice’s eyes widened. “There wasn’t a rule change. From the beginning of the competition, there was a size requirement. It makes it fairer. How would you feel if an amazing soloist moved to town and decided to enter? Or a big band or an orchestra?”

Bobbie nodded as if considering the idea. “But it’s never been enforced, at least not as long as I can remember. What changed this year?”

“A concerned citizen stopped by. She had read all the rules—I haven’t even read them all in at least a decade—and she felt it was important for everyone to know ahead of time. Otherwise, several groups could be disqualified at the last minute when it was too late to recruit new members.”

“That would have sucked if you’d found out right before the competition,” I told Bobbie.

“What would our little town do without our concerned citizens?” Bobbie asked, her smile as sweet as syrup. “Who suggested you remind the participants of the rule? I’d like to thank them for being so thoughtful.”

I thought she laid it on thick, but even so, Alice wasn’t biting.

“I promised not to mention it to anyone,” she said.
